Cuero Community Fan Drive
Cuero Regional Hospital and Whispering Oaks Rehab and Nursing are kicking off a fan drive for the elderly. Many seniors find it challenging to stay cool during the hot Texas summer months, especially those on a fixed income. Exposure to extreme heat can be deadly for the elderly. Fans are a way to provide some control to utility costs, as well as help to lower body temperatures.
The Cuero Community Fan Drive will take place until Friday, July 19. Those wishing to receive a fan are to fill out at voucher available at Whispering Oaks Rehab and Nursing. Fan distribution will be held Monday, July 22 until donations are exhausted.
“Leaders at both of our facilities recognized a need and wanted to provide donations, as well as invite the public to participate in providing relief from the heat to area seniors,” said Emily Weatherly, Marketing and Development Director at Cuero Regional Hospital. “We understand many of our elderly have restricted funds and, if we can provide some relief to their pocketbook, as well as help them to maximize efficiency and comfort of cooler air temperatures in their homes this summer; we want to do our part to help.”
Box fans are also being donated by businesses in town. “Alamo Lumber Co. in Cuero was one of the first to step up to order box fans, as well as offer to donate 10 fans to our drive,” said Vicki Bothe, Marketing Director with Whispering Oaks Rehab and Nursing in Cuero. “We want to encourage businesses and individuals to participate in this fan drive so we can provide fans to our neighbors in need. Please purchase a box fan locally and drop it off at our location or Cuero Regional Hospital before July 19th so we can distribute these as soon as possible.”
Bothe said the organizations are partnering with area law enforcement and fire departments to provide fans to distribute, as well as fans will be distributed on location at Whispering Oaks, located at 105 Hospital Drive in Cuero starting July 22nd until all resources are exhausted.
“Fans are not the only way to manage electricity use,” said Bothe. “Closing blinds to block the sun, using heat-generating appliances like dryers late in the evening and cooking outside are just a few suggestions to keep homes cooler.”
Donors wishing to participate in the fan drive may drop off fans until Friday, July 19 at 5 p.m. at either Cuero Regional Hospital, located at 2550 N. Esplanade in Cuero or Whispering Oaks Rehab & Nursing, located at 105 Hospital Drive in Cuero. For more information, contact Vicki Bothe at 361-243-6571.
