Understanding Hernias: Know the Signs, Know Your Options

June is Hernia Awareness Month, an important time to talk about a condition that affects millions of Americans each year—many of whom may not even know they have it. As a general surgeon at CRH, I see how hernias can impact everyday life—and how quickly we can help patients feel better with the right treatment.

What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias are commonly found in the abdomen. You might notice a bulge or swelling that worsens when you stand, strain, or cough.

Common types of hernias include:

  • Inguinal hernias (inner groin)
  • Umbilical hernias (belly button)
  • Incisional hernias (at the site of a previous surgery)

Know the Symptoms

Hernias don’t always cause symptoms, but when they do, you may experience:

  • A visible lump or bulge
  • Pain or discomfort (especially when bending or lifting)
  • Heaviness or pressure
  • Burning or aching at the site

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to complications, including the risk of a strangulated hernia, which may require emergency surgery.

When to Seek Help

If you suspect you have a hernia, don’t wait to get it checked. Hernias do not go away on their own, and over time they can become larger and painful. The good news is that hernia repair is common and effective surgical procedure, often done with minimally invasive techniques that allow for faster recovery and less post-operative pain.

Advanced Treatment Options at Cuero Regional Hospital

At CRH, we offer both traditional and robotic-assisted hernia repair surgery. Robotic surgery provides incredible precision and allows us to operate through very small incisions. This approach typically leads to:

  • Reduced pain
  • Minimal scarring
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker return to normal activity

As a surgeon, I work closely with each patient to determine the best surgical plan based on the hernia’s type, size, and location—as well as your overall health and lifestyle needs.

Take the First Step Toward Relief

Hernias are more common than you might think, especially in men over the age of 40, in women after childbirth, or after abdominal surgery. If you’ve noticed a bulge or are experiencing discomfort, I encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Early treatment leads to better outcomes and fewer complications.

You don’t have to live with the pain or uncertainty. This Hernia Awareness Month, take charge of your health—and know that expert help is right here at Cuero Regional Hospital. Call to schedule your appointment (361) 275-3466, or visit us at www.CueroRegionalHospital.org .
